Chemical Plant (Sodium Chlorate)
1970's - Present
This plant began manufacturing sodium chlorate in 1957 and In
the early 1990's Mitchell Installations was awarded the modernization
project as the
General Contractor. As a result of the successful
modernization of the plant with state-of-the art technology, it positioned the facility
as one of the leading suppliers of sodium
chlorate to world markets.
Sodium chlorate is an industrial salt produced from water and common salt in
reaction with an electric current. The pulp mills use sodium chlorate to produce
chlorine dioxide, used to bleach pulp for the manufacture of high quality and
environmentally friendly white paper products. Sodium chlorate is available in
two forms, dry white crystal that looks like table salt and clear solution. This
plant manufactures in excess of 90,000 tones of sodium chlorate annually , which
is shipped globally.

Chemical Plant (Chlor-Alkali)
1970's - Present
This chemical plant produces chlor-alkali, which refers to the two chemicals (chlorine and an alkali) which are simultaneously produced as a result of the electrolysis of a saltwater. The most common chlor-alkali chemicals are chlorine and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) but can include potassium hydroxide and muriatic acid. There are 3 types of electrolytic processes used in the production of chlorine and caustic soda: the diaphragm cell process, the mercury cell process, and the membrane cell process. In the mercury cell process, chlorine and sodium hydroxide are produced simultaneously by electrolyzing seawater (sodium saltwater or brine) in a mercury cell.
Mitchells work on this project dates back many years and has continued ever since. We have been part of several maintenance projects, turnarounds, a hyrdrogen recovery project, and the installation and modification of several hydraulic rail car loading ramps.
Prolonged contact with sodium hydroxide solutions can cause a high degree of tissue destruction. Therefore, we place an even greater degree of emphasize on safety. Over the years, we have developed, nurtured, and grown our internal safety culture into one that can enable us to work in the most demanding of environments.
